Why domains expire unnoticed

The registrar's reminder mails go to the address given at registration years ago: the intern, the predecessor, the CEO's private address. The agency that runs website and mail appears nowhere. It learns about the expiry when the client calls because nothing works any more.

DomainWarn queries the registry for every domain via RDAP, the successor of WHOIS, and reports the upcoming expiry to you, regardless of whose address is on file with the registrar.

What is monitored

  • Expiry date: notice 60 days ahead, warning 30 days ahead, critical on expiry or deletion.
  • EPP status: missing transfer lock, clientHold and serverHold, pendingDelete.
  • Registrar: a registrar change as an indication of a transfer.
  • Name servers according to the registry: deviation from the name servers actually answering.
  • DNSSEC: DS record in the parent zone so that a DNS migration does not take the domain down.

The special case of .de

DENIC does not publish an expiry date for .de domains because the contracts run between holder and registrar. For .de DomainWarn therefore monitors status, name servers and reachability: if the status of a .de domain changes or it disappears from the zone, it is reported. For .com, .net, .org, .eu, .at, .ch and most new endings the expiry date is available.

Can DomainWarn renew the domain?
No, DomainWarn has no access to registrar accounts. It alerts in time so that you or the client can renew.
How often is the registry queried?
Once a day. Registries rate-limit RDAP queries and more often is unnecessary because expiry dates rarely change.
Are holder details stored?
No. DomainWarn stores registrar, dates, status and name servers, no personal data of the holder.
